Afton Road Mix is a road gravel that is very stable from wash-out and is well-suited for steep driveways, or road beds that experience erosion with traditional road gravels.  We normally ship large quantities (train loads) directly from Afton to your job site.

The dark Afton Road Mix makes a very hard-packed surface. It is excellent for high-erosion areas or those that are prone to pot-hole formation.

The light Afton is designated as 21aa, and has a much higher percentage of stone, with stone size up to 1.5"

Bank run gravel, dirt, soil, etc. is just that--straight out of the bank.   Usually available are gravel, sand, dirty sand, loam, clay, and dirt.  They are not processed to remove foreign material, large rocks, and so on.

This is a picture of the badlands we took on our family vacation last year.

Actually it is an eroded pile of course crusher dust, which packs hard and can be used for an inexpensive basket ball court, driveway topping, or, mixed with sand, horse arena fill.

Drain Stone is 3/4" to  1 1/2" and is used in drain fields for septic systems.  It also makes an excellent landscaping stone around houses, gardens, under decks and so on.

We have several large rocks on hand, all of them weighing a good 2000 pounds to the ton.  Special delivery arrangements will be necessary on these.  By the way, one cubic foot of solid rock weighs approximately 150 pounds.

This rock, still avail-able at the time of this publishing, has what appears to be chert nodules embedded in the stone, and is layered or banded.  Below is a picture with some detail.  The nodule in the center of the picture is about 1" by 2".

Top soil is available in pit run which will have some stones, twigs, clumps of sod and maybe a golf ball or two in it.

Screened soil will have the golf balls removed (along with other debris and stones)

Pea Stone is screened out before the crusher and washed, so it con-tains rounded stones with very little broken or angular chips.

Size is from 1/4" to 7/16".

There are four different ranges of natural rocks: 1"--3", 4"--10", 8"--14", and 8"--24". None go through a washing process, so will be "dirty" when delivered, but will clean up nicely after a few good rains.  As can be seen by the tape measure in the picture, some of the stones in the 8-24 pile are large enough that they might need to be handled by machinery.

Uses include erosion control on steep banks, rip-rap on lakes or streams, retaining walls, or landscaping.

22A and 23A are codes used to define road gravel.  Each type must meet certain criteria in minimum and maximum sizes and percentages in sand, crush, fines, etc.

22A is generally used as a base prior to a top coat of asphalt; 23A is used as the final surface of a road way.  23A contains more "packing" fines and clay than does 22A.

If an application is needed on a roadbed or driveway that is prone to erosion, we would recommend the Afton road mix (see top of page).
